About Tanaka Books

Beside the rice fields of Xuejia, in an old Japanese-style house, there's a small bookshop that sells only Japanese books. It's a café, too.

Why Japanese books

Reading a book in the original is the gentlest way to get to know a language. Every book on our shelves is one the owner has read and wants to recommend. Whether you've just learned kana or already read novels, there's one here for you.

Why Xuejia

Xuejia sits in the middle of Tainan's rice fields. There's none of the city's rush, just paddies, old streets and slow afternoons. We hope the shop becomes one more reason to visit.

Books, coffee and Japanese

Besides selling books, we brew coffee, teach Japanese and run a book club. We want the shop to be more than a place to buy books: a place to gather and learn slowly.

What we believe

  1. Read slowly

No rush. One book can last a long time, and be read many times.

  2. Start with the original

Reading Japanese books in Japanese is the best practice there is.

  3. Learn together

Book club and classes mean you never learn alone.
